Fronter provides a way of looking into the school in a completely different way

Kastellet School is a combined primary and lower secondary school, offering classes for students from year 1 through to year 10. A new school with a modern design, Kastellet was finished in 2004 and is intended, inside and out, to provide for the education of a new generation of students. Using Fronter for almost 4 years, Kastellet has a strong and established ICT policy at their school, which follows the nationwide trend for increased use of ICT in education. ICT skills have been
specified as one of the four basic skills assessed in the Norwegian competency evaluation. Not only focused on ICT equipment, Kastellet has from its start followed a strategy of 'investing in teachers and skills, not only ICT equipment,' says Assistant Head Torill Røeggen. The school employs 3 Digital Guidance teachers, who work towards helping other teachers technically and pedagogically with their use of Fronter.

'Nothing is given to teachers, parents or students on paper - everything is on Fronter.' This way, all information is posted up on the Fronter platform and
can be found and accessed at any time of the day. All staff notes and updates are posted in a staff room, as well as all information relating to the functioning and running of the different year groups. Kastellet has organised their library resources such that all information about library books/resources, and their availability, is accessible through the platform.

Year groups are put together and each assigned their own room in Fronter. This way there are less rooms and locations for users to search to find information, and a maximum number of people are kept updated and informed by the same information. The design in all Fronter rooms is standardised to a certain extent, as the digital guidance teachers provide teachers with a page template. In this template, they are then responsible for inputting all information relating to their year groups and subjects. This way, certain information and templates can also be reused in following years and groups.

 

Our aim is to make the students active participants in their learning

 

 With the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) tool, students are able to have a long term
perspective and view on their education, seeing it as a process over which they are
the major players and responsible for their own achievements and progress.
Twice a year, students conduct a short presentation for their parents facilitated by
the ILP, where they are responsible for giving an overview of their school work,
records and goals for the future. Teachers are also included in this process and are
given the possibility to comment and specify short and long term learning goals
with the parents and students.

 

The students find it much more motivating to work on the computers as they have access to many more resources at their fingertips and can work much faster

 

Fronter is a great way to keep up communication with your friends and teachers and a way for your parents to keep in touch with all that you are doing and 'not' doing at school. With Fronter you can work on projects at school and at home, with friends and alone - without having to move books or papers to and from school. There is now no chance to lose important paper and documents as it is all stored in one place and accessible from anywhere.
